Our Timeline
Florence shares with Kwaku that many of her students are struggling to attend school because they do not have proper shoes. Their conversation connects an immediate need in her classroom with Kwaku’s desire to use his own opportunities to create opportunities for others.
The first MpaBoa Sneaker Gala is held at the High Bar in New York City. Friends, family and community gather around the cause, raising $10,000 to help provide shoes for students in Ghana.
Using funds raised through the gala, Kwaku purchases hundreds of pairs of sneakers in the United States for students in Ghana. The idea moves from fundraising into direct action.
The first Sneaker Distribution “Field Day” Experience is held in the Amanfro School District, providing sneakers to more than 160 children. The experience reveals even more about the barriers students face, including something as fundamental as many children not knowing their shoe size or arriving without socks.
The work continues in the U.S. through creative community events and fundraising, including Afrobeat Burnout, Sip & Paint, Giving Tuesday and other efforts designed to bring people together around supporting students.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mi Daakye expanded its support beyond sneakers, distributing PPE supplies to 7,000 students and helping meet an urgent need affecting their ability to safely continue their education.
The work formally became Mi Daakye Foundation Inc., establishing the organization as a U.S.-based nonprofit with deep roots in Ghana and a growing vision for removing barriers to education.
Mi Daakye returns to Amanfro for its second Sneaker Distribution “Field Day” Experience, expanding the distribution to include PPE supplies and continuing to respond to the evolving needs of students.
Community fundraising continues in the U.S., including the third MpaBoa Sneaker Gala, as Mi Daakye builds greater support around its work.
Mi Daakye holds its third Sneaker Distribution “Field Day” Experience in Ghana, continuing its commitment to helping remove barriers between students and their education.
The fourth MpaBoa Sneaker Gala brings the community together once again, continuing to build support and resources around Mi Daakye’s growing mission.
Mi Daakye returns to Ghana for its fourth Sneaker Distribution “Field Day” Experience, continuing the commitment that began with that first group of students in Amanfro.
Building on the role art had long played within the MpaBoa Sneaker Galas, Mi Daakye expands Art for Change into a more intentional fundraising platform. Through collaborations with artists who share a commitment to giving back, original works help generate support for Mi Daakye’s educational initiatives while creating opportunities for participating artists.
Art for Change continues to grow, reaching new audiences and collectors, including NBA player Tyrese Haliburton. The program demonstrates how art, community and philanthropy can come together to create greater opportunities for students.
Art for Change reaches a new milestone through the sale of a large-scale work by Ghanaian artist Solomon Adufah to rapper and entrepreneur Rick Ross. The work later receives national visibility when it is featured inside Ross’s Miami Beach home in Architectural Digest, marking another moment of growth for the artists, community and mission connected through Art for Change.
